We are delighted to confirm that we are opening a new Global Health Film Festival in Zanzibar this Summer.
The inaugural Zanzibar Global Health Film Festival (13-15 September) has been developed and will be delivered in close partnership with WAJAMAMA, a women-led social enterprise-NGO and Zanzibar’s first holistic healthcare centre.
The programme will feature excellent storytelling from all around the world, with a strong focus on maternal and child health, reflecting the strategic priorities of WAJAMAMA. The programme has been drawn from previous Global Health Film Festival editions and screenings, alongside some recent more local titles.
Headline films include the African Premiere of WOMENstruate (GHFF2019), an unflinching vignette into the lives of seven women from across Africa and their experiences with menstruation, without shying away from the taboo.
Nafisa Jiddawi, Founder and CEO of WAJAMAMA said "Storytelling holds an immense power that surpasses language barriers, ignites empathy, and vividly represents the challenges humanity faces. I am deeply honoured to partner with Global Health Film and introduce this extraordinary storytelling platform to our remarkable continent for the first time ever! It will be an unforgettable expedition, sharing impactful narratives and fostering a secure environment for conversations about finding a path forward as well!"
Global Health Film Founder and Director Gerri McHugh added “Film is such a powerful medium for creating understanding and empathy in complex, neglected global health issues; we are thrilled to forge this new partnership with WAJAMAMA and look forward to working with Nafisa Jiddawi and her team to bring excellent global health storytelling to a Zanzibari audience!”
In-person screenings and expert discussions will take place in Zanzibar Town, elements of the final programme will be available on-demand and via livestream for our international audiences.
Registration opens mid-August – more details to follow shortly!
