Building our Board of Trustees: could you help take Global Health Film to the next level? | Global Health Film

From our early days as a modest project operating on a shoestring, we now have a global remit and many exciting plans in the pipeline. To support our growth and expansion, we are  applying for registered charity status and are now seeking to appoint a number of Trustees to help take us to the next level.

Our history

We started in 2011 with in-kind support from the Royal Society of Medicine, and the aim of screening 6-8 global health films per year to doctors and other health professionals.

Thanks to a generous grant from the New Venture Fund in late 2013, and strategic support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and our Advisory Board, we were able to significantly broaden our activities from 2015 onwards, including an annual two-day Global Health Film Festival and a Global Health Film Fellowship programme, centred around film-making training for health professionals. Since 2016, the Global Health Film Festival has taken place at the Barbican, Europe’s largest arts venue.

GHFi governance

As we grow and professionalise, our structure is also developing; we will retain our Advisory Board but are replacing the original Steering Committee with a Board of Trustees, in line with our charitable status. The new GHFi Board of Trustees will have a minimum of three, and a maximum of twelve Trustees, each serving a three-year term, renewable once. Three of the original GHFi Steering Committee will join the Board of Trustees.

Trustee vacancies

Developing the GHFi Board of Trustees will be a staged process to ensure continuity. In this first wave of Trustee recruitment we are seeking three Trustees to join the Board from April 2018 for a three-year term of office.

Previous Board experience is not necessary as governance training will be provided. We are looking for people at all career stages who share our vision for GHFi and our passionate belief in the power and potential of film as a catalyst for change. We want you to be generous with your ideas and your contacts, and genuinely excited by the opportunity to develop a start-up organisation – albeit one with a solid history of success as a project.

The time commitment for this role, including attendance at quarterly Board of Trustees meetings, and Board papers reading time, is approximately one day a month.

Trustee roles are unremunerated however economy travel expenses are reimbursed.

The deadline for applications is 18 March 2018.

Additional information can be found in the overviewTrustee role descriptionapplication form and the Trustee Code of Conduct. If you would like to discuss the Trustee role or have any queries, please email Gerri McHugh, GHFi Co-founder and Director
